Diabetes Care: How To Avoid Complication

Diabetes Care: Hospital Bed

Diabetes care is a lifelong commitment for the patient and his family. To avoid diabetes complication, the patient must have regular checkups with his doctor. Besides having to do this, he will also have to lead a healthy lifestyle as part of a diabetes care routine. The following diabetes care tips will help to reduce the risk of complications.

Annual Medical Checkup

Besides having your regular monthly checkup, you must also go for a complete annual medical checkup as part of a diabetes care program. This health check is to assess your overall health with emphasis on eyes, heart and kidney.

Annual Eye Examination

People with diabetes have a higher risk to having eye problems. An annual eye examination by a specialist is necessary to detect vision problems so that it can be rectified when it is still treatable. If your health problems include hypertension or high cholesterol level, you have to visit your ophthalmologist or optometrist more often as part of your diabetes care. Early intervention will prevent diabetes retinopathy that can lead to blindness.

Biannual Dental Examination

Diabetes weakens the immunity system of the patient. Your body will have limited capabilities to fight infections and the mouth is the most susceptible part of the body for bacteria growth. You should make arrangements to visit your dentist every six months ad part of your diabetes care. This helps to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis which can lead to tooth loss.

Suggested Vaccination

Vaccination should also be part of your diabetes care routine to avoid serious complications due to the disease.

The following are the minimal vaccinations that you need to do:

  • Annual flu shot
  • Pneumonia vaccination – 5 year booster shots for diabetics with heart and kidney disease
  • Tetanus vaccination
  • Hepatitis B vaccination

Control Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, coupled with diabetes is a perfect "condition" that can lead to heart attack and stroke. If you have both, diabetes and high blood pressure, your diabetes care would involve trying to maintain an almost normal blood pressure. The American Diabetes Association recommends a blood pressure of not more than 130/80 mm Hg. You should practice eating a healthy diet with regular exercise daily. Control your salt intake and reduce the alcohol consumption, and take your hypertension medication on time.

Handle Your Stress

Stress causes your body to produce hormones that can inhibit the effect of insulin. This causes your blood glucose level to rise. Learning how to manage your stress is a part of diabetes care that you need to do. Taking things easy, or going for a vacation, or doing things that can cheer you up to reduce your stress.

Conclusion

Diabetes care is a lifetime obligation you owe to yourself. Nobody understands your body except yourself. Doctors, nurses, medical support staff and your family can do little if you do not care for yourself. Take the above measures to avoid further complication to your already fragile body. Take care and God bless you.
