Diabetes cure is often talked about by diabetes patient. There's always a hope by these people that their disease can be treated and someday they will be healthy again. However, in reality, diabetes is an incurable condition due to malfunctioning of the pancreas. The only way to really cure this disease is to have your damaged pancreas removed and replaced with a healthy one. Therefore, take it with a grain of salt when someone suggests that diabetes can be cured by medication or herbal treatment.

Research On Potential Diabetes Cure

Even though there is no known diabetes cure yet, scientists and medical researchers are busy exploring various possibilities. For decades, scientists have been looking for ways to replace damaged insulin producing cells of the pancreas. This is because patients with type 1 diabetes have to take insulin several time a day throughout their life. It is not too bad for type 2 diabetes patients because they can control their blood glucose level through diabetes diet, exercise and some oral medication. But eventually all type 2 diabetes patient will have to depend on insulin therapy in order to keep the blood glucose level under control.

There has been some progress in stem cell technology to replace damaged pancreas cells. Initial results are encouraging but it is still years before it can be used. There are also budget constraints as well as objections from certain quarters regarding stem cell research. Some medical universities have gone ahead and carried out clinical trials and so far the results have been encouraging.

Pancreas Transplant

A pancreas transplant can cure certain types of diabetes but the risk involved is very high. It should be noted that not all diabetes patient are suitable for this type of procedure. Normally pancreas transplant is used as a diabetes cure in type 1 diabetes patient with poor or diseased kidney. Solitary pancreas transplant as a diabetes cure (without transplanting the kidney) still remain controversial in the medical circle.

The main drawback of this surgery as a diabetes cure is rejection of the transplanted organ by the body. Immunosuppressive drugs (such as cyclosporine and corticosteroids) are prescribed to minimize graft rejection. However, these drugs will effectively weaken the patient's bodily ability to fight infection – effectively weakening the body's natural defense against various infections.

It seems that diabetes cure will be a reality in a near future. This is the hope of many patients suffering this disease for years.
