Diabetes - The Chronic Disease

Diabetes: workout

Diabetes is the most widespread chronic disease affecting people all around the world. It is an incurable ailment but most people can lead a normal lifestyle if it is properly diagnosed and treated. Sometimes, it is possible to control the blood sugar level by controlling the type of food consumed. There are numerous drugs and medication that can be deployed to help diabetes patient lead a normal life.

Advice! Diet plays a vital part in controlling diabetes. There is no one way to eat with diabetes. How you eat will depend on treatment (insulin therapy or oral medication), exercise, and personal taste. This is the reason it is important to work with a dietitian for specific eating advise.

Diabetes is a situation where the blood glucose level in the blood is higher than the level of normal people which is between 80 to 110 mg/dl. The test used to measure this blood glucose level is fasting plasma glucose test. This happens because the pancreas fails to produce insulin. Insulin is required to transport the glucose into cells where the glucose is used to produce energy. When insulin is absent in the blood stream, this glucose starts to build up. This in turn creates other health problems that lead to blindness, liver failure, kidney malfunction and also coronary disease. If diabetes is detected early, the patient can begin treatment and management of their blood glucose level. This will in turn avoid the other problems mentioned above.

There are three types of common diabetes condition, namely, type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually found in children and young adult. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes and usually in adults and older people. Gestational diabetes is a temporary situation experienced by some pregnant mothers. Their blood glucose level is high during pregnancy and returns to normal after delivery.

Can I Inherit Diabetes From My Parents?

There is no definite answer to this question. Medical records have shown that 10% of type 1 diabetes patients have siblings or close relatives suffering the same disease. In type 2 diabetes, there is lesser co-relation between the two.

A person will not be aware he is suffering from the disease until the condition gets worst because the symptoms of diabetes are difficult to notice. However, you should be screened for the disease if you have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • frequent feeling of being thirsty and hungry
  • need to urinate frequently at night
  • loosing weight abruptly
  • loosing vision
  • easily gets tired and exhausted
  • hand and feet feels numb
  • difficult to heal cuts and bruises

The usual myth about diabetes is food. Usually, food is being blamed as the cause of diabetes. Eating too much chocolate or sugary deserts is often linked to causing diabetes in a person, which is not totally true. It causes a person to be overweight which is the leading factor to the disease.

Activity!!! Keeping records (date, time, and blood sugar level) is also a good idea. Records help you and your health care team know what has happened and how that has affected your current health. It will also help them to adjust your medication to work better.
