Gestational Diabetes In Pregnant Woman

Gestational Diabetes: Mother and baby

Gestational diabetes or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition affecting pregnant mothers who do not have symptoms of the disease before the onset of their pregnancy. As with all types of diseases, gestational diabetes must be treated and controlled to ensure a healthy mother and baby. Studies have shown that about 3% to 10% of mothers suffer from this although the exact reason for it is not known. However, scientists believed they have certain clues as to what causes this to happen.

Probable Causes Of GDM

Scientists and medical researcher believed during pregnancy, the hormones produced by the body interferes with insulin which helps glucose to be converted to energy. The pregnancy hormones will bind to the insulin receptor. This interference causes a rise in blood glucose level resulting in gestational diabetes. It is a normal phenomenon and occurs during the second trimester of the woman's pregnancy.

Risk Factor Of GDM

Women who have been previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes or pre-diabetes have a higher risk of gestational diabetes. It also stands true if you have previously been diagnosed with Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Impaired Fasting Glycaemia.

You have a higher risk if your family has a history of diabetes especially Type 2 Diabetes. Statistics have also shown that pregnant women above the age of 35 have a higher risk compared to younger mothers. This can be made worst if you are overweight and smokes.

Symptoms of GDM

The symptoms of gestational diabetes are similar to all the other type of diabetes. The signs and symptoms are often obscure and go unnoticed because many think it is part and parcel of being pregnant. They will experience increased in frequency of urination, being constantly thirsty, easily feels tired, bladder and yeast infection and blurred vision. You should get yourself screen if you have any of this symptom.

Screening Gestational Diabetes

Screening of GDM is normally done after taking into account the risk factors involved. This is because most of the GDM cases are asymptomatic – no noticeable symptoms. The most common diabetes test for GDM is fasting plasma glucose test. This test will examine the blood glucose level after a fasting period.

Conclusion

While gestational diabetes is a cause for concern to the pregnant mother, she must remember to remain calm. Gestational diabetes can be control and is not too life threatening. The main thing to remember is to reduce unwanted stress and follow the advice of your doctor or gynecologist. This will ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
